Participation of Children and Youth in Liturgy
Birth to 3 years old
- Families with toddlers carry up the gifts. One parent carries up gift while another carries the child or walks holding the child's hand.
- Supporting parents of toddlers participation in community life (e.g., being tolerant of the child's need to be with the parents when they lector or serve as Eucharistic minister if child can be there quietly.
- Parents being part of planning Family Masses.
- Seeing their parents involved is important for the child's own development.
3, 4, and 5 Year Olds
- All of the above, plus:
- Bringing up the cruet or empty chalice with parents during the offertory procession (Family Mass, regular Sundays, special celebrations).
- Dressing the altar (Bringing the gifts as described above).
- Singing in the Family Choir, with parents present.
- Participating in simple dramas and dances.
6, 7, and 8 Year Olds
- All of the above, plus:
- Leading Prayers of the Faithful with their family during Family Mass.
- Bringing up the bread or wine with parents during the offertory procession (Family Mass, regular Sundays, special celebrations).
- Dressing the altar (Bringing the gifts as described above).
- Singing in the Family Choir with or without parents.
9-12 Year Olds (And First Communicants)
- All of the above, plus:
- Lectoring for Family Mass.
- Participating in more complex dramas and dances.
- Participating in the Sprinkling Rite.
- Dressing the altar, carrying the altar cloth.
- Bearing candles. Carrying the cross.
- Receiving the gifts and setting the table.
- Ministers of hospitality.
- Singing in the choir (older children in this group).
Confirmed Youth, 13-21 Year Olds
- All of the above, plus:
- All ministries available to confirmed members of the community, except Eucharistic ministry.
- Lectoring for regular Sunday Mass.
- Collecting the offering.
- Singing in the choir.
- Planning Family Mass (mentored).
- Coordinating Family Mass (mentored).
- Being a part of decision making groups.
- Communicate directly to confirmed teens that all ministries (except extraordinary ministry) are available, and personally invite them to participate.
Adults
- All of the above, plus
- Eucharistic Ministry
